Most takeoff tools think “civil” means grading and drainage
Feed a villa or apartment package into a takeoff tool built on a North American definition of civil, and it will hunt for grading contours, paving areas and utility runs. It will find none of them, and it will report that the civil scope is empty — on a drawing set containing thousands of square metres of blockwork and plaster.
On most projects outside that convention, civil is the building works. Blockwork by wall type and thickness. Internal plaster, external plaster, ceiling plaster — each priced differently. Screeds, waterproofing, sunken filling. And then the RCC: footings, columns, beams, slabs, staircases, with formwork and reinforcement measured alongside.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does "civil" mean sitework only?
No, and this is where most takeoff tools get it wrong. On a great many projects — particularly in India, the Gulf and much of Asia — the civil package is the building works: masonry, plastering, screeds, waterproofing and RCC. A tool that only looks for grading, paving and utilities will report zero on a civil set that is actually full of quantities. Aginera reads both: building works and sitework.
What building works quantities does it extract?
Masonry and block walls (including AAC, thermal block, brick, stone and CMU) measured by area with thickness carried as the pricing attribute, partition and parapet walls, boundary walls, internal and external plaster, ceiling plaster, render and skim coat, screeds and floor screeds, plaster bands, damp proof course, waterproofing and tanking membrane, sunken filling, lintels, window sills, copings, chajjas and sunshades, drip moulds, plinth protection, skirting and thresholds.
What about RCC and concrete structure?
Excavation and backfill, anti-termite treatment, soling, lean concrete, blinding and PCC bed, foundations of every common type — isolated, combined, raft, pile and pile cap — plinth, tie and grade beams, retaining and basement walls, columns, beams, slabs and roof slabs, shear walls, staircases with landings and waist slabs, lofts, RCC sunshades, water tanks and sumps. Formwork, shuttering and centering are extracted alongside, with reinforcement, mesh and binding wire.
Does it handle sitework drawings too?
Yes — civil site plans, grading plans, paving plans, utility plans, landscape plans, and civil details and detail sections are all read with their own schemas. The point is that Aginera routes each sheet to the right reader rather than assuming every sheet marked "civil" is the same kind of drawing.
Are the quantities in the right units for a BOQ?
Masonry and plaster come out as area, walls carry thickness so they price correctly, linear items like skirting and plaster bands come out as length, and concrete comes out as volume where the drawing dimensions support it. Where a drawing gives an area but not a thickness, Aginera reports what the drawing actually says and flags the missing dimension rather than inventing one.
How reliable is it on a real civil set?
Schedules and tabulated data extract most reliably. Dense plan sheets where wall types are hatched rather than annotated are harder, and drawings in centimetres or with unusual scale conventions have historically been a weak point that we test against explicitly. Every line references the sheet it came from and carries a confidence score, so the review is targeted. Aginera flags sheets it could not read rather than reporting a confident zero.
